Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka is the perfect getaway for families looking for a tropical adventure complete with fun-filled activities, once-in-a-lifetime experiences and plenty of relaxation. Surrounded by palm trees and set against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s pristine southern coastline, Shangri-La’s Hambantota is the largest resort of its kind in the country offering families with children of all ages a vast array of activities from drone flying in the blue skies above the resort to captivating and memorable safari experiences in the neighbouring National Parks.
For young guests aged between four and twelve, paradise comes in the form of the resort’s ‘Cool Zone’; a supervised club dedicated to fun and educational activities. It is the most extensive Kids’ Club on the island offering a seven-metre-high flying trapeze, trampolining, a drone flying area, a children’s pool and the resort’s own child-friendly water park complete with slides and fun water features. There is also an indoor crèche facility for the even littler with arts and crafts tables and a jungle gym. Meanwhile, parents can indulge in a bespoke wellness experience in complete tranquillity at the resort’s CHI Ayurveda Spa, which can be enjoyed guilt free whilst children are looked after by an expert team. Moreover, together, families can enjoy beach volleyball, a sunset bike ride to the fishing village of Godawaya or relax by one of three swimming pools, including the Sunset Pool which blends seamlessly into the resort’s scenic landscape.
For the more creative, or for families that would like to immerse themselves in traditional Sri Lankan culture, Shangri-La’s Hambantota has a unique artisan village within the grounds of the resort. The space is dedicated to supporting and preserving the treasures of southern Sri Lanka’s artisan communities giving guests the opportunity to interact and learn from local artists and craftsman. Families can learn traditional crafts through a daily activity schedule taught by local artisan weavers, sculptors, painters and potters. From traditional Sri Lankan masks to ornate jewellery boxes and simple paintings for little artists in the making, guests are encouraged to take their creations home as souvenirs.
To complete the experience, as the sun sets and the sky becomes a mixture of soft pinks and yellows, the village transforms into a vibrant display of traditional Sri Lankan dance and music. Seated in the village’s quaint amphitheatre surrounded by lanterns, guests can enjoy the show whilst indulging in local delicacies and refreshments.
The resort boasts unrivalled proximity to some of the country’s finest nature and wildlife reserves including the magnificent Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, home to the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, bear sloth and elephant. Families can set off on safari together at dawn and share in the truly unforgettable experience of spotting wildlife. Guests are also invited to take a riverboat safari down the mangrove-filled Walawe River where tropical birds, bats and impressive white-bellied eagles gather as langur monkeys swing from branch to branch alongside the boat. Local guides are on hand to point out parading peacocks and thirsty buffalo and introduce guests to the friendly local fishermen.
The resort has four restaurants serving a wide range of cuisine to suit palates of all ages. Among the offerings are Bojunhala, for an excellent international buffet or for Sri Lankan specialities, and Sera for Hawker-style stalls featuring flavourful, street food inspired, cuisines of Southeast Asia. Shangri-La’s Hambantota also has a dedicated kids’ area which allows for a fun dining experience through activity-based meals and custom food stations built for children.
Moreover, up to two children of the resort’s guests under six years old can enjoy complimentary buffet meals at the all-day dining venue and additional children that are under the age of 6 and all children who are between six and twelve years old can benefit from 50% off the buffet price.
