The inaugural Fabio Capello Charity Golf Event took place last weekend at the stunning La Quinta Golf and Country Club Resort in Marbella. Hosting the event alongside Fabio was three times world golf champion Manuel Piñero – the pair were raising funds for both the Seve Ballesteros and the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Foundations.
The event began on Friday with a practice round for the golfers and a cocktail reception in the evening, where golfers and their guests relaxed to the sound of an acoustic guitar. 23 teams took part in the golf tournament Saturday morning playing the La Quinta course designed by Manuel Piñero himself. Competition was fierce and final results close. The overall competition was won by the Benahavis team with Fabio Capello’s team coming a close second.
Saturday evening the golfers were joined by partners and other guests to enjoy the Gala Dinner hosted by Maurice Boland from Talk Radio Europe. Welsh tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan delighted Sr. Capello and guests by singing in both English and Italian and 16 year old Rebecca Tate won everyone over with her powerful and beautiful voice. The Marbella Big Band had everyone up on the dance floor and DJ Danny Kelly kept the party going until the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Severiano Ballesteros Cancer Foundation was set up, in conjunction with Cancer Research UK, to raise funds for research into brain cancer after Seve himself was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008. Sir Bobby Robson fought cancer an incredible five times. Sadly, 17 years after his first diagnosis, he lost that long and courageous battle on 31 July 2009. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation focuses on the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it. The Fabio Capello La Quinta event raised in excess of 9.500€ for the Seve Ballesteros and the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Foundations.
